DB 6 Presentation- Documenting The Great Depression

The photographs were a sight in the olden times of documentary. These particular photos express the American lifestyle being at home or work, which was taken at the time of The Great Depression in the 1935’s. The photos had an important part due to Americans living in rural and small towns. However, there were famous photos that described people who were taken away from the farms and migrated to look for work.
The FSA-OWI photos formed about 1600 colour photographs. Although, the collection included 164,000 white and black photos that were let go to over 160,000 of these images. The “Migrant Mothers” Photographs is one of many photographs that were a requested image from FSA-OWI.
This particular photograph “Migrant Mother” is a cycle of photographs that Dorothea Lange made of Florence Owens Thompson and her children in February of 1036. I believe the “Migrant Mother” photo helped people get through the time of the great depression. I feel it was a tool to assist the people. Although, looking at the photo, “Migrant Mother”, the great depression was an extremely difficult time and experience for children. During the great depression, there was a huge factor for rural girls and boys that suffered from malnutrition also. The impact shows change needs to occur in order for children and adults to get help. Also, I believe the children’s education is another issue because the children do not have clothing. As stated, the captions on the photos explain the migrant agricultural workers family, seven hungry children and their mother and the father being native Californian. I truly, admire the photos in black and white because it allows you to feel and look at the photo in a different light. The photo of the “Migrant Mother” states the emotions she is feeling and believing.
The “Migrant Mother” was very powerful in the Great Depression. The “migrant mother” had a huge reflection on the victims who suffered the most. The role nowadays is to focus on how and why the people suffered the way they did during the great depression. It is an eye opener to see because it is an overpowering photograph about class. The class difference is a sensitive topic in the American culture too. When looking at the “Migrant mother” we should look deeply into the meaning of what it is actually about, and focus on what people went through. I feel it is important to elaborate and take time in looking at a significant piece and realizing true facts behind it. Today is a terrific day to start noticing educational facts about important photos and the history related. These photos made me realize a lot, it allows me to see how grateful my well being is. It really opens my eyes to appreciate my friends and family as well. Also, I am thankful to have a mother and father that provide me with food and shelter.
